Delaware Valley College turf management classes volunteered for the United States Golf Association’s 2014 Mid-Amateur Championship. The national golf tournament was held Sept. 6 through Sept. 11 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Students volunteered to help prepare the course for the tournament, networked and observed the Club’s staff members at work. DelVal Professor of Turf Management Dr. Doug Linde ’91 also took his “Intro to Turf” class to the tournament so that students could watch the course being prepared for the event.
“At DelVal, we stress hands-on experience and we’re grateful to have a strong relationship with Saucon Valley Country Club, which allows our students to get involved in events of this scale,” said Dr. Linde. “Students who participated showed a great dedication to their program and represented DelVal well. They not only got to see what goes into preparing and maintaining a course for a national tournament, they got to be part of that process.”
Participating students included: Dan Spall ’14, Kyle Behnert ’15, Dave Hoffman ’14, Zach Kulikowski ‘16, Steve Dosiak ’16, Mike Jensen ’15, Jonathan Stiles ’17, Alex Haberern ’17, Andrew Kauffman ’16, Robert Marterella ’16 and Kevin Robinson ’15.
Students had a chance to network with some accomplished DelVal turf management alumni. Jim Roney ’96 is the director of golf courses and grounds for the course. Many other full-time employees of Saucon Valley Country Club’s staff are DelVal turf management alumni including: Scott Gingrich ’08, Mike Molchan ’10, Eric Junkins ’14, Jesse Ridington ’13, and Dan Finlayson ’95.
Volunteers from the DelVal community included: Chris Butler ’97, Dave Smith ’12, James Bryson ’13, Alyson Painter ’14, Frank Perrone ’14 and Frank Heery ’95.
