DelVal wins equine tournament in Virginia

Feb 05, 2010

The Equestrian Team at Delaware Valley College scored a college first when it won the Tournament of Champions Winter Classic Jan. 30 in Fredericksburg, Va.
Coach Cory Herald Kieschnick said this was the first time in DelVal's history that the equestrian team had won an event of this caliber. It did so by competing against 19 other colleges and universities, including recent national champions Mount Holyoke and Virginia Intermont.
"This is wonderful exposure for the college," she said.  "While Del Val routinely finds itself  at the top of the standings in the Philadelphia region, a fifth place is the highest finish we've previously accomplished at the Tournament of Champions."
She said clutch novice flat rider Kathryn Gibson, a senior equine studies major, clinched the victor by winning a third place ribbon late in the competition.
The event was held inside the equestrian center of the University of Mary Washington. It followed the format of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.  The top teams from the East Coast and Midwest each bring eight riders. Riders compete on the host college's horses over fences and on the flat in eight classes from walk trot equitation to open equitation over fences.
Judge Michelle Morosky based her placings on the correctness and effectiveness of the rider's position.   Points are earned based on placings and the team who earns the most points at the end of the day is deemed Champion of the Tournament.
Kieschnick said the "golden rule" for winning big shows is to keep scoring points!  "The Aggies kept bringing home ribbons - seconds, thirds, fourths --  which all added up to the win," she said.
