Dr. Chris Tipping, chair of the Department of Plant Science, will begin serving as interim dean of Delaware Valley College’s School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences today, Jan. 20, 2015. Dr. Tipping replaces Russell Redding who served as dean for three years. Redding left his position at DelVal to become Pennsylvania’s next secretary of agriculture.

“Dr. Tipping is a caring, dedicated educator who always goes above and beyond for this community,” said DelVal President Dr. Joseph Brosnan. “He brings to the deanship a thorough understanding of the science of agriculture, exceptional insight into the student experience, and the skills needed to effectively lead DelVal’s School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences during this interim period.”

Dr. Tipping earned his M.S. in systematics from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in entomology and nematology from the University of Florida where he focused on how insects impact the health of plants. His postdoctoral experience includes research at the University of California and North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC). While at NFREC, Dr. Tipping was a member of the First Detector Program, a nationwide initiative designed in part to predict and respond to potential bioterrorism threats to our nation’s agriculture. He currently serves as associate editor for Florida Entomologist, a scientific journal.

Dr. Tipping joined DelVal’s faculty in 2005. In 2011, he became an associate professor and in January 2014 he became of chair the Department of Plant Science. He was one of the founding members of the Precarious Alliance steering committee, which plans events that bring nationally recognized speakers to campus to address issues related to sustainability. He has served as co-chair of the curriculum committee since 2006 and advises two campus clubs. In 2010, the Student Government Board selected Dr. Tipping as faculty member of the year.

“I am honored to serve as interim dean of DelVal’s School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences,” said Dr. Tipping. “DelVal has a rich history; knowledgeable, caring faculty; and students who are passionate about working to address some of the most important issues of our time. I’m honored to be a part of preparing future leaders.”

“Dr. Tipping’s commitment to the College and our students is exemplary,” said Dr. Bashar Hanna, vice president for academic affairs. “I am confident he will effectively lead the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.”
