DelVal Biology Major Recounts Study Abroad Trip in Denmark
Posted on April 13, 2017 by Taylor Edgington ’18, a Delaware Valley University biology major.
We left USA at 4 p.m. Now, it’s 5 p.m. the next day. I have been up for more than 36 hours straight due to time changes. Flying on the plane was amazing. The take off was like a roller coaster. When we landed in Denmark, we got our luggage and then went out to meet our host families. Mine wasn't there, another host was there to take me to my host's house. So now I’m in Denmark, in a stranger’s car, driving to McDonalds. It’s crazy, it’s exciting and I love it! I finally got to meet my host and her mom. They are both very nice. Their house is very modern looking and uncluttered with a lot of open space.
I woke up at 9 a.m. and had to figure out the shower! Denmark plumbing is a bit different. I love that there are a lot of plants around the house. Breakfast was some type of bread toasted with butter. It was like a bagel. My host put a slice of cheese on her bread and then jelly on top of that. There is also hot tea with every meal. We are getting ready to drive into town now!
In town I was surprised at the amount of product labels that I could read because they were in English. A lot of the brands were the same. Also some words in Danish are similar to English, like apple, tulip and banana. We walked around an outdoor mall that had a lot of old buildings. My host family's mom works for a clothing warehouse so we went to the store she supplies. I tried on a few clothes. They were really cool and a unique style. I liked the beads and jewels on the clothing. We also went to an indoor mall. Walking around the mall I noticed a lot of black liquorish flavored things: mints, gum, and then just black liquorish itself. Then we went to a plant store. The large old cacti were beautiful! I wanted to take them home so badly. But I got some seeds. Some of the plants that were there I have also seen in the USA, so that was a surprise. I thought Denmark would have its own plants. Now we are back home waiting for Cecelia to come home from work.
Cecelia and I played a game similar to dominoes, but with numbers. Called Triominos. Dinner was good. It was apple and carrot salad, mashed potatoes, ham, and a mustard gravy. We went to a house party and then to a club after. The club was really fun. We went to bed at 3 a.m. The Danes can party hard!
I slept in until 12:40 p.m.... oops. But it’s okay because Cecelia did the same. I met her dad today. He is a ship captain and was out at sea until now. We watched Netflix until her sister came with her boyfriend. We ate apple pie and played wii bowling with her family. Then we just hung out at home and ate pizza for dinner. The pizza had chili on it and Cecelia's had salad on hers.
We were up at 6:50 a.m. for school. We met up with everyone from DelVal and took a tour of the school. We sat in a Danish language class, then went to a rainforest. The rainforest was amazing! It would definitely not be allowed in the USA. It was open with many plants. Monkeys, turtles and birds were out of their cages. I got to hold a monkey and pet and feed a lemur! My friend and I explored the rainforest together. It was really cool! Unfortunately, we only had an hour to tour the rainforest. I wish we had more time. Next, we took a tour of historic old town.
I was up at 6:50 a.m. and to school for 7:30 a.m. At 8:30 a.m. we took a bus to visit queens castle and the old town. We went back to Cecelia's house after everything and then had pasta and salmon for dinner with brownies for dessert. Then we went to Old Irish Pub and were in bed at 10:30 p.m.
We were at school at 8 a.m. for economics class and then Danish language class. Lunch was a pulled pork sandwich. We then met the mayor and went shopping with Dakota and his host.
We went to visit an invocation furniture company. Lunch was egg cake (an omelet) with pork fat on top. Then we went back to school.
We had marketing class at 8 a.m. We had lunch at the school during the farewell ceremony and then went shopping downtown with Dakota. We had prom at 8 p.m. and went downtown and stayed out even later than the last time. We slept and then were up for a shower and breakfast. We had to be to school at 7:15 a.m. to catch the bus to the airport. We were back on DelVal’s campus at 9:30 p.m. for some well-deserved sleep!
